Founded in 1998, the Michigan State University Women's Club Soccer Green (the official MSU Women’s Club Soccer team as recognized by the University) team is a student-run program affiliated with the university intramural program. The team competes in the Women's Midwest Athletic Conference ( W-MASC ) which is affiliated with the National Intramural and Recreation Sports Association ( NIRSA ).

The team is selected through an extensive try-out process which takes place during the first week of school. Our regular season league play runs from the beginning of September through the end of October.

Qualifying teams will compete in the season-ending regional tournament in late October or early November. Teams that qualify through the league’s Power Rankings and/or Regional tournament will have the opportunity to compete in the NIRSA National Championships which are typically held the Thursday through Sunday before Thanksgiving.

In the 2021/22 seasonal year we added a second team, MSU White to the program. Players that are not selected to the Green team are eligible to play on the White team.

Costs
There is a $25 tryout fee to help cover club costs.

The player fee for the season is typically around $350 for the regular season. This covers all team associated costs, including but not limited to the following:

  • League Fees

  • Referee Fees

  • Field Rental Fees

  • Travel Expenses

  • Coaches Compensation

  • Regional Tournament Expenses

Should we make it to the National Championship Tournament, there will be an additional per-player fee to cover the following:

  • Tournament Entry Fee (if necessary)

  • Team Accommodations

  • Coaches Travel Expenses

There are a few individual costs that are not covered by the above fees.

  • Uniforms

  • Additional Player Apparel

  • Airfare for National Championship Tournament

Training Schedule
The team typically trains three days per week starting the week after tryouts and continuing through the Regional Championship Tournament in late November. We will train twice per week in the winter months after the second semester begins. We also train once or twice per week in the Spring.

League Play
We play in the North Division of the W-MASC against the following teams:

  • Bowling Green State University

  • Central Michigan University

  • Ferris State University

  • Grand Valley State University

  • Saginaw Valley State University

  • University of Michigan

  • University of Toledo

  • Wayne State University

  • Western Michigan University

During the regular season, each team accumulates Power Ranking points which are used to determine bids for both the Regional Tournament and the Nation Championships. Power Ranking points are based on 6 pts for a win, 3 pts for a draw, 1 pt for each goal scored (max 3 goals for), and 1 pt for a shutout for a maximum of 10 points per game.

Post Season Play
The first and second-place teams within each division along with the next 4 highest placed teams based on the Power Rankings are selected for the W-MASC Regional Tournament. The winner of the regional tournament receives an automatic bid to the National Championships.

National Championships bids are automatically given to the top-ranked team in the Power Ranking Standings and the winner of the Regional tournament. If those are the same team, the second-place Power Rank team will receive an automatic bid as well. Should our region receive more than two bids, the third and fourth bids will be based on Power Rankings and the fifth to the Regional Tournament runner-up.
